Cape Contours has mastered the art of gabion construction. Gabion retaining walls are simply rock contained neatly within wire mesh baskets. Grey stone, Table Mountain sandstone and round river boulders are our more common varieties of rock we use.
The art of constructing these walls is in the skillful packing of the rock to give a neat facing finish and a stable construction. Gabions can be used as a retaining structure, wall or terrace due to their large weight and stability and ability to allow water to pass through the wall freely. The advantage of Gabion walls as apposed to a brick and mortar wall is that once the wall is in place there is little to no maintenance of the wall. Due to their construction out of natural materials, they also have a softer and more natural effect in a landscape.
We are able to design our gabions in AutoCad as engineer’s drawings and then convert the drawing into a 3D computer generated image so that our client sees the final effect prior to construction commencing. The initial capital outlay for the wall might be higher than a conventional brick wall but in the long term you will save greatly on reduced maintenance costs.
