Lavenderhill Sportsfield

The Lavender Hill project consisted of a softball pitch, a rugby pitch, a rugby practice pitch, two half-size rugby pitches and a grassed athletics track. Surrounding berms and spectator areas were hydro seeded. It was a challenging project. The extremely sandy soils resulted in rapid water loss through evaporation and rapid infiltration.

A considerable amount of fine compost was applied to the sandy soils to improve the organic content, which aided in retaining moisture for longer periods between irrigation cycles and also served as a source of organic nutrients since the existing sand on-site was nutrient deficient. Regular applications of fertiliser were required to sustain the soil nitrogen levels. The water sourced from the borehole required the installation of an iron filtration due to the high groundwater iron content. Despite the many challenges, the installation was a success.
